Plumber, Drainer and Gasfitter Licences Explained

A plumber's licence in Queensland runs on two layers: the individual on the tools holds an occupational licence, and the business taking the job on holds a contractor licence. The QBCC (Queensland Building and Construction Commission) issues both.

The occupational licence proves the tradesperson's competence. The contractor licence proves the business behind the job can run it properly. Three classes matter to your home:

  1. Plumber

covers the water supply pipework, taps, fixtures and fittings inside your property.

  2. Drainer

covers the below-ground drainage that carries waste and stormwater away.

  3. Gasfitter

covers gas systems, their pipework and connections, including cooktop installs and compliance certificates.

Our licence covers plumbing and gasfitting, so one visit can sort the water and the gas.

Diagnose, Quote, Repair and Test

  1. 1

    Describe the fault

You tell us what you're seeing, on the phone or through the form. Details up front mean we arrive with the right parts.

  2. 2

    Diagnose on site

We trace the problem at your place rather than guessing from the description. A slow drain on one of the postwar streets, for example, gets checked for offset joints in old earthenware lines before anyone quotes.

  3. 3

    Quote

You get a fixed quote before any work starts: flat-rate pricing, no hidden fees, and nothing begins without your go-ahead.

  4. 4

    Repair and test

We do the work, then run every fixture and line we touched. Card or EFTPOS on site settles it, or ask us about Fix now, pay later.

  5. 5

    Paperwork

Notifiable work earns you a copy of the Form 4, and gas work earns a gas compliance certificate. Book a plumber at any stage.

How Plumbing Work Is Regulated in Queensland

Queensland plumbing rules come down to two regulators, the QBCC and your local council, and two documents, the Form 4 and the gas compliance certificate. The QBCC issues licences and keeps the notifiable work register. Brisbane City Council assesses applications, grants permits and carries out inspections.

Regulated work splits into three categories: permit work, notifiable work and minor work. A licensed plumber or drainer must do all three, which the QBCC says protects your home, your health and your rights. You can also ask the council to inspect notifiable work at any point.

The paperwork you receive depends on the job:

  1. Form 4

after notifiable work, you or whoever engaged us gets a copy. The QBCC can supply one if it never arrives.

  2. Gas compliance certificate

handed to you as soon as the gasfitter finishes, with a duplicate to the network operator within 5 days where the system runs off a gas network.

Plumbing Across Neighbouring Suburbs

Our service area takes in Chermside and the neighbouring suburbs, from Aspley and Geebung to Kedron and Wavell Heights. Two of those neighbours, Chermside West and Stafford, have their own pages on our areas list, and the full catchment sits on our suburbs we cover list. Whether it's a house, a townhouse or a unit above the shops, the same licence and the same stages apply.

Questions People Ask Our Plumbers

Call (07) 3524 7163

How can I check a plumber is licensed in Queensland?

Yes, you can check any plumber yourself. The QBCC's online registers confirm whether a licence is current, and searching your street address shows whether a Form 4 has been lodged for your home. Our licence number is QBCC No: 15024607.

Does gas work in a Chermside home need its own licence?

Yes, it does. Queensland requires a licensed gasfitter for gas work, which covers everything from fitting a cooktop to certifying the pipework. Before we start, you're entitled to ask to see the gas work licence.

Does plumbing work in Chermside come with a warranty?

Yes, it does. Labour carries a lifetime labour warranty, and our Fix-It-or-It's-Free guarantee applies (T&Cs apply). If we're late, $100 comes off your bill.

Do you work on units and rentals as well as houses?

Yes, we do. We take jobs for owner-occupiers, landlords, tenants and unit owners alike. Who approves the work and who pays can differ in a rental or a scheme, so say which one you're in when you call.
